Rules & Regulations

  1. Derby time is Saturday, June 28th, 2014 from 7 am – 7 pm SHARP. Boat launch will be opened at 6:00 am.
  2. All entrants MUST depart from the Marathon Launch site and return to this Launch site at the end of the fishing day. Departures and arrivals will be tagged in and tagged out. Failure to comply will result in disqualification.
  3. For 2014 BOUNDARIES are established. This Derby is open to Lake Superior only, between The West White River to the Steel River.
  4. In the event of inclement weather during the period of the Derby, the Derby will be deemed official if four (4) consecutive hours of fishing were available. If four (4) consecutive hours are unavailable, the Committee will consider the possibility of hosting the Derby on the following day. Upon failure to host on either day, a random draw will take place from all registered entries in order of first to last place.

  5. Eligibility:

  6. All boats registered in the Derby MUST pay a launch fee of $10.00 per boat.
  7. All Captain’s MUST attend Captain’s Night scheduled on Friday, June 27th, 2014 at the Royal Canadian Legion in Marathon-7 pm to 11 pm for the pre-Derby meeting. Registration forms are available at all ticket selling sites, or on-line at http://marathonsummerfest.com. For the 2014 Derby, REGISTRATION will occur on Friday, June 27th, 2014, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm at the Royal Canadian Legion in Marathon and again at Captain’s night noted above. Complete your form at the Legion or bring a completed form with you to the Legion along with your $10.00 per boat docking fee. A boat tag will be assigned to you upon acceptance of the registration form.
  8. All boats and participants MUST adhere to the rules, laws and regulations outlined in the Canadian Government Small Vessel Regulations. 2014 Ontario fishing regulations apply.
  9. Each person in a boat MUST be in possession of a Derby Entry Tag. Failure to comply with this rule will result in disqualification. A person is considered to be either an adult or child. Derby Entry Tags are assigned at Registration.
  10. All fish MUST be weighed-in at the official weigh-in station ONLY. The weigh-in station will be located at the boat launch. Anglers entering fish, must be within the marked line at the designated weigh-in station area by 7 pm sharp. No exceptions.
  11. Angler Derby Entry Tags are required for weigh-in. No exceptions.
  12. Only three (3) species are eligible: Lake Trout, Salmon and Rainbow. Minimum size for weigh-in is 2 lbs.
  13. Eligible fish entered in the Marathon Summerfest 2014 Fish Derby must be freshly caught on a hook and line and retrieved by rod and reel from a boat within the boundaries of The West White River and Steel River of Lake Superior (excludes Superior Shoals). All fish must be fresh, not frozen, whole not gutted. No gaffed, snagged or foul hooked fish will be eligible for prizes.
  14. All fish entered may be subject to a biologist examination.

  15. Judging & Prizes:

  16. Prizes are awarded to the contestant who catches the heaviest fish by gross weight, either Lake Trout, Salmon or Rainbow, and presents that fish to the official weigh-in station within the prescribed period and who has complied with all Derby rules as applicable.
  17. Winning fish will be ranked by gross weight of the individual fish entered. When fish are weighed, they are to be free of any dirt or debris, visible tackle or visible bait must be removed prior to weighing. OVERALL: All prizes awarded are determined by Winner’s Choice and in order of ranking of weight. Prizes are awarded to the heaviest fish, i.e. Lake Trout, Salmon or Rainbow. The Winner MUST be in attendance to claim their prize or their prize is forfeited.
  18. In the case of a tie on the weight, the tiebreaker and win will be the earliest time of weigh-in
  19. Each participant is limited to one (1) Weight Category Prize.
  20. Guaranteed prizes are, but not necessarily limited to, the top ten (10) heaviest eligible fish. Presentation of prizes will begin at 11:00 am on Sunday, June 29th, 2014 at the Marathon Arena. The maximum number of prizes a participant could win is three (3). For example: 1 x Weight Ranking Prize, 1 x Random Draw prize for enclosed trailer (retail approx. $4,300 includes tax) and 1 x Early Bird Prize for $ 750.00 Cash.
  21. Weight Ranking Prizes: Winners must be in attendance to accept their prize. No cash substitutions or prize exchanges. All prizes are final.
  22. Random Draw Prize: Derby participation is not a condition for winning this prize. Attendance at the time of draw is not a condition for winning this prize.
  23. Early Bird Prize: Attendance at the time of draw is not a condition for winning this prize.
  24. The Random Draw Prize for the enclosed trailer donated by Major Machine Works will take place immediately following the awarding of all Fish Ranking Prizes on Sunday, June 29th, 2014 at the Marathon Arena. Derby participation is not a condition for winning this prize. Attendance at the time of draw is not a condition for winning this prize.
  25. The Early Bird Prize draw will take place on Sunday, June 15th, 2014 at 4:00 pm at the Marathon Centre Mall. The ticket must have been purchased before 4:00 pm, June 15th, 2014 to be eligible for the Early Bird Prize draw.
  26. Violation of any of the above rules will result in, not only the disqualification of the violator but also the participant(s) and boat involved.
  27. All prizes must be accepted as awarded. No cash equivalent.

  28. Safety & General Rules:

  29. To help ensure the safety of all participants, the Derby Committee reserves the right to close or cancel the Derby Event at any time for any reason. All decisions by Derby officials are final.
  30. For safety reasons, it is highly recommended that all boats are equipped with VHF monitoring Channel 68, cellular phone or similar device.
  31. By entering this Derby, you give permission to the use of any photographs taken at the Derby for advertising purposes.
  32. Parents and or adults entering children into the Derby are responsible for any and all actions by their children, or children they are accompanying. The parents or accompanying adult must assume all liability for any and all accidents or injuries that may occur.
  33. Unless agreed upon beforehand, all boats and anglers entered in the Marathon Summerfest 2014 Fish Derby, must be TAGGED-OUT at the end of the Derby, June 28th, 2014 at 7:00 pm. Failure to do so will result in disqualification and a phone call to the Canadian Coast Guard and the boat(s) and angler(s) will be reported as missing.
  34. It is understood that all coolers, bait wells, live wells and other closed containers may be subject to a search at any time.
  35. It is understood, that the volunteers working at the Boat Launch are there to assist with the launch of boats if asked, but they will not be responsible for launching or retrieving boats launched for this Derby. That is the responsibility of the Captain and Crew.

Marathon Summerfest Fish Derby 2014 Liability Waiver

Each entrant upon registration to compete in the Marathon Summerfest Fish Derby 2014, agrees to indemnify and save harmless the Marathon Summerfest Fish Derby, their agents, their employees, co-sponsors and event organizers and volunteers from any liability, loss, damage, expenses, claims or demands that may arise from participating in this derby.
